ROYAL CROWN DERBY- BLUE MIKADO (c. 1949)- ROUND CAKE PLATE- MINT!

$78.99

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IS A LOVELY ROUND CAKE/PASTRY SERVING PLATE FROM ROYAL CROWN DERBY IN THEIR POPULAR BLUE MIKADO PATTERN.  THE BACK STAMP, WITH YEAR CYPHER MARK, DATES IT  TO 1949.

THE MIKADO** IS AN OLD TERM REFERRING TO THE  EMPEROR OF JAPAN, AND ALSO,  TITLE OF ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERAS — FIRST PERFORMED IN 1885;  THE CROWN DERBY PATTERN IS PROBABLY A TESTAMENT TO IT.

“”””THE  MIKADO OF JAPAN opera is about  Nanki-Poo, the runaway son of the Mikado (Emperor) fleeing a forced marriage; disguised as a traveling musician, meets and falls in love with Yum-Yum, who is  betrothed to her guardian, Ko-Ko, a tailor and newly appointed executioner whose first “customer” is himself for flirting.  It is a comedy with themes of death and cruelty, dealt with by humour and understatement, and ending in laughter, song, and dance.
