“”””THE MIKADO OF JAPAN opera is about Nanki-Poo, the runaway son of the Mikado (Emperor) fleeing a forced marriage; disguised as a traveling musician, meets and falls in love with Yum-Yum, who is betrothed to her guardian, Ko-Ko, a tailor and newly appointed executioner whose first “customer” is himself for flirting. It is a comedy with themes of death and cruelty, dealt with by humour and understatement, and ending in laughter, song, and dance.
