THE EIGHT SIDED, TRUE GOTHIC SUGAR BOWL AND LID ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION; APPEAR RARELY USED. THERE ARE NO CRACKS OR CHIPS (REPAIR/FILLING TO SMALL CHIP ON LID) …. BUT THERE IS OVERALL CRAZING …… OUTSTANDING FOR 175 YEARS OF AGE !
MARINO WAS A PATTERN MADE BY SEVERAL POTTERS DURING THE MID 1800’s IN EITHER BROWN OR BLUE, AND WHITE.
THE SUGAR BOWL MEASURES 6 1/4 INCHES FROM HANDLE TO HANDLE END, 4 3/4 INCHES ACROSS THE OCTAGONAL RIM, AND STANDS 7 1/8 INCHES IN HEIGHT TO THE TOP OF THE LID FINIAL. IT CAN HOLD 4 CUPS OF YOUR FAVOURITE. THEY CERTAINLY LIKED THEIR SUGAR WAY BACK THEN !!

**** IRONSTONE china was first successfully manufactured in 1800 as an alternative to expensive imported porcelain china. Because ironstone- made of clay, ironstone slag, and flint- was thick and heavy, the shape of the china became an important aspect in it’s production.
In the 1840’s several potters (James Edwards, John Ridgway, Mayer Brothers) introduced china with angular shapes. Subsequently, in 1844, John Ridgway and Company patented a design called “Classic Gothic”, a hexagonal shape with crown finials and scrolled arches.
